Leading for impact

Delivery is hard. Especially when it comes to making a difference to the lives of others.

🤔 Best practice doesn’t always translate from one context to another
😑 Legislation and guidance is rarely enough to change behaviour
😥 And that\’s before you even get to those who would rather talk about problems than solutions

So how can we Lead for Impact?

A few thoughts here from my experience and from the coaching conversations I have with leaders who are striving to do just that.

The final countdown

Last year I started to share my top ten leadership coaching themes from 2023. Here are the final five 🥁:

💪Courage, not confidence.
❓Questions, not advice.
📖The stories we tell ourselves.
🎬Getting out of the drama
💉Immunity to change.
What\’s your biggest take-away from last year?

Back to work 😃😰

We\’ve only been back for three weeks but it\’s felt like three months. There\’s so much to do…\”

It\’s been a \”full on\” start to the year. Lots of excitement, but anxiety too.

So I\’m inviting you to pause for a moment to reflect:

🏃‍♀️How are you pacing yourself?
🤗 What are you taking care of?
🔁Will January on repeat will give you the year you want?
And if not, how might coaching help? 🤝

Feeling out of kilter?

🤔Something is a bit… off.

🫤I’m unsettled… out of kilter in some way.

These sorts of twinges can be a sign that our values are not being met in the work we\’re doing.

Perhaps you value personal connection and remote working is making that harder, or maybe you thrive on learning and stretch, but aren\’t getting enough of that in a role that you\’ve mastered.

Getting into the detail

🔎Detail? That’s not my job any more. I do strategy now.

🤔Er, no.

As a senior leader you still need to be able to get into the detail. To dive beneath the surface and see what\’s really going on down there. To support and fully empathise with your team. To really understand the challenges… and to drive meaningful impact.

A few suggestions this week on how to keep this in mind as you rise.

More than Post Its

As a facilitator you have many roles

🟨Post-it master
⏱Time-keeper
👂Listener
🥊Challenger
🎼Conductor
🦸‍♀️Coach…

The list goes on. Good facilitation can be magic and it takes more than just post-its.

But what do you actually do?

Sometimes I get a quizzical look when I say that I’m an Executive Coach.

Maybe it conjures up an image of me on the sidelines of a meeting room, waving my arms at my client to signal their next move, giving them oranges and a pep talk between rounds to encourage them to keep going.

The encouragement bit is certainly true.

But I never yell or pour water on your head.

So, here\’s a quick explainer on coaching, in case you were wondering who it\’s for and what it\’s like.

Get your office right

There was never any time to think. To “just” think.

You get promoted largely because of the way you think and yet when you get to the top you don’t have time to do it. Multiple clashing meetings, a daily avalanche of emails, pressing decisions at every turn, reforms to deliver, targets to meet, oh and a bunch of people to lead, engage and motivate.

Getting your office right is essential if you’re going to survive and thrive in the most senior leadership roles. You need to let go of managing your calendar and to build a team that reflects what you value and if you’re lucky, becomes the glue that holds everything together.
