The list of \u2018top tips\u2019 we shared still feels very relevant for stepping into a new leadership role today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"\\\"ember4858\\\"\" class=\"\\\"\\\"\">Since then I\u2019ve changed country, changed sectors and changed career and worked with so many fascinating leaders, from Albania to New Zealand. So here\\&#8217;s the list along with a few additions from around the world, nearly 10 years later\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"\\\"ember4859\\\"\" class=\"\\\"\\\"\"><strong>What we said then:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"\\\"ember4860\\\"\" class=\"\\\"\\\"\">\ud83e\udd1dWHO?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"\\&quot;wp-block-list\\&quot; wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\\\"\\\"\">Get to know your team and <strong>all<\/strong> your stakeholders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\\\"\\\"\">Be ruthless about getting good people and rigorous about building capability from the start<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\\\"\\\"\">Make friends with the HR Director<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\\\"\\\"\">Find a great PA and business manager and work out what you need from them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\\\"\\\"\">Seek support: establish your networks and get a buddy, mentor or coach<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"\\\"ember4862\\\"\" class=\"\\\"\\\"\">\ud83c\udfaf WHAT?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"\\&quot;wp-block-list\\&quot; wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\\\"\\\"\">Be clear about what you\u2019re accountable for and understand the priorities of those you work to<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\\\"\\\"\">Stop doing your previous job: find space to reflect on what you are doing and whether it\u2019s at your new level<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\\\"\\\"\">Choose your corporate contributions carefully \u2013 you have more autonomy now than ever before to decide what get involved in<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\\\"\\\"\">Don\u2019t try to get a grip on all of the detail, it\u2019s impossible.\u00a0Pick your priorities and set up the systems (and data) to triage the rest<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"\\\"ember4864\\\"\" class=\"\\\"\\\"\">\ud83d\udc83HOW?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"\\&quot;wp-block-list\\&quot; wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\\\"\\\"\">Ask your senior team to define their priorities, where they see you adding value and how they want to give and receive feedback<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\\\"\\\"\">Communicate your focus and preferences clearly and regularly \u2013 never miss a team meeting!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\\\"\\\"\">Prioritise your work\/life boundaries \u2013 share them and keep refining how you achieve a balance that right for you<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\\\"\\\"\">Work out how much of yourself you want to share and with whom<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\\\"\\\"\">Trust your judgement: you got the job<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"\\\"ember4866\\\"\" class=\"\\\"\\\"\"><strong>\u2026 and what I\u2019d add now:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"\\\"ember4867\\\"\" class=\"\\\"\\\"\">\ud83e\udda2Be credible <em>and<\/em> vulnerable<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"\\\"ember4868\\\"\" class=\"\\\"\\\"\">\u23f3 Slow down: give yourself time to pause and reflect<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"\\\"ember4869\\\"\" class=\"\\\"\\\"\">\ud83e\udd13Have a go: don\u2019t let the perfect be the enemy of the good<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"\\\"ember4870\\\"\" class=\"\\\"\\\"\">\ud83d\udcccFocus on what you can influence, not on what you can\\&#8217;t<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"\\\"ember4871\\\"\" class=\"\\\"\\\"\">\ud83e\udd3c Build trust through conflict<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"\\\"ember4872\\\"\" class=\"\\\"\\\"\">\ud83c\udfc6Generate collective leadership<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"\\\"ember4873\\\"\" class=\"\\\"\\\"\">\ud83d\udc42Listen more<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"\\\"ember4874\\\"\" class=\"\\\"\\\"\">What advice would you give to your younger self?<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What do you know now that you wish you knew then?
